WHERE IS HITLER?
IN the midst of all the jubilation which hailed the coming of the peace in Europe, the question which has arisen above the din of celebration, and which is occupying the minds of millions today is the persistent query—'where is Hitler.' In spite of the most careful and stringent search no trace of the arch villian of the piece can be found. Granted the burnt and battered bodies of four unrecognisable defenders of the Chancellery have been taken by the Russians as 'pos- • sibly being the remains of the Fuehrer' but it has to be remembered that the little ex-paper hanger employed a known number of stand-ins, and that it is quite possible that any or all of these unfortunates might belong to the little group of voluntary dupes who sold themselves body and soul in order to give Hitler a greater sense of security. The fact also that Goering, and now Himmler have been captured also lends colour to the possibility that Hitler too may have had his plans for a safe retreat in the event of a German collapse. The mystery stories of his having taken poison, of beingshot at his post in the Chancellery; or of falling at the head of a few fanatics in a last desperate charge; all seem to lack conviction; whilst a further point which gives rise to strong doubts* is that all such stories are hearsay. There were no actual witnesses. The closing stages of the war have already brought some amazing exposures to light. There is still the possibility of others including the discovery of Adolph Hitler, alive and in hiding.
