WHAKATANE PRAISED
OPOTIKI RESIDENT'S LETTER FACILITIES AND BEAUTIFICATION Under the heading 'A comparison' a correspondent to the Opotiki News Mr Geo. McNee writes a letter which should be of considerable interest to the residents of Whakatane whom it directly concerns. The letter reads: —
May T lie allowed a .small space in your columns, to try to express my admiration ol' the manner and efficiency in which the Whakatane municipal bodies carry the work of making their ,strcets ) footpaths and town generally second to none of any New Zealand town I have visited. The comparison between our town and surroundings is a glaring example of .something wrong somewhere. I contend no man should criticise another unless he can prove lie can do better. I am not conversant with the relative amounts of revenue received by either body. I do know that the removal of nightsoil is charged on rate notice, in | Whakatane and is 9d as against Is Id here. I fancy our most urgent need is unity amongst our councillors and all suggestions for improvements from any councillor should be well 'Considered before being thrown overboard. We have space that Whakatane lacks to make our town equal if not better than theirs. So now then! to quote a great man. Our rates are lower I believe but who
would mind a slight increase if we were to enjoy the improved facilities and beauty. The. folk of Whakatane deserve the highest praise for the manner in which they keep the front of their homes, lawns. etc., so beautiful.
