COST OF FOOTPATHS

CHARGE AGAINST ROADS

ACCOUNT

COUNTY COUNCIL DECISION

I Now that the County Council is proceeding wherever possible to form footpaths in the various townships under its- administration the question of relative costs is a vital one; and forme,d the subject of a strong debate at the last meeting. Cr McCracken contended that the footpaths should not be charged wholly against the main roads account as had been done in the. past. He pointejd out that Matata and Taneatua reaped considerable benefit in this respect for no less than 60 per cent, of the total rates came from the Rangitaiki and Tarawera ridings and he was going to watch their interests. In spite of Cr McC-racken's forceful front he was opposed by Cr Burt, the Chairman and Cr McGougan who contended that as the footpaths- were used by the general i)ublic at large that it should be met out of a general account. Cr McCracken moved that the. cost be met 550 per cent, by the riding concerned and 550 per cent, by the main roads account. This motion was Idefeated by (i votes to 5 and an amendment carried to the eil'ect. that the full cost should be. borne by ihe roads account.
