INTER-SCHOOL SWIMMING
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING
FOUR SCHOOLS COMPETE
Last Tuesday Ihe first inter-schoo
swimming meeting among the Bay of Plenty secondary schools was held at Te Puke the onlj r centre possessing a swimming bath not dependent upon tidal conditions. The carnival was an undoubted success and in consequence it is. hoped that it may become an annual event on the same lines as the athletic meeting.
In spite of heavy rain on the previous evening the day could hardly have been better, and in between events competitors were sheltered from the wind and aisle to enjoy warm sunshine. The Whakatane swimmers who took part had a fair measure, of success, but were at a distinct disadvantage in starting, turning and diving through lack of experience in a SAvimming bath. Under the circumstances it was distinctly creditable that they performed as well as they did, particularly in diving, as they have been able to have no practice at all on a springboard this season. The standard of sprint swimming was fairly good, although some of the diving was. excellent, some was very weak, and the breast stroke swimming was almost uniformly poor. Whakatane competitors were placed in the following events: — • Boys' 50yds Senior A: T. Davis 3. Boys' 25yds Senior B: M. Tiepa 3. Boys' 50yds Junior A: J. Wano 3. Boys' 25yds Junior B: C. Dive Junior Boys: C. O'Rourke 2. In the eight unit relay, reminiscent of the flying squadron event at a New Zealand championship the Whakatane competitors swam practically neck and neck with their Tauranga and apparently lost by a very small margin, but the team was disqualified through the last swimmer starting a fraction of a second before his time.
In points the Whakatane team finished third on the afternoon's swimming, Tauranga being first, and Te Puke second. Opotiki D.H.S. was also represented.
