SWIMMING SPORTS
ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL EVENT
EXCELLENT FORM SHOWN
P"i» ,r ° ure< * by first class weather department of the WHsfeatftrifc District High School held its annual swimming sports on Wednesday y ai the Old Wharf. The programme commenced at 12.30 p.rru and a varied list of events attracted numbers of spectators as well as naturally interested parents. The four Houses namely Matanga 9 1 9 Tera, Hau Hau and Orakaii were all well represented and every effort was made by to build up points for their own respective house. A twenty-five yard length was marked off from the wharf with a barge, and this distance was used as, a standard both in handicap and championship events. In the usual races held all those not competing were not the least backward in showing their enthusiasm and spurring on their own particular choice, and until 3 p.m. the town rocked to the cheex*s of dozens of young voices. The races brought to light the one main fact that not only is the youth of Whakatane completely at home in the water, but also in a number of cases,. capable of putting a really professional touch into swimming. The diving was, as usual, the most spectacular. Both girls and boys competed in this class and some very neat entrances into the water were witnessed. The competitors were made up from members of the different houses, perhaps this being the explanation of why at each dive, if it happened to be a really good one, three-quarters of the pupils present cheered only feebly, while the other quarter positively shook the surrounding buildings. Good diving talent -was shown by all competitors, one or two especially putting up a performance which attracted all eyes. The corfu dive was also followed with much interest.. A or lifebuoy is moored some distance away from the wharf and competitors are obliged to dive, and swim under water with the purpose of coming to the surface through the corfu. The buoy is taken farther out after each has had an attempt and the competitors eliminated till only one, the remains. Both boys and girls competed in this in separate the apparent amount of lung space possessed by them bringing exclamations of amazement from all who watched. At the conclusion, including spectators were completely out of breath.
