FURTHER APPEALS
RESERVED DECISIONS GIVEN
PAPER MILLS CASES
Appeals were entered by the Whakatane Radio and Electrical Company at the. last sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board for Norman Alexander William Carter and David John Scragg.
Reservist Carter (married with one child Grade I) was described as the only full-time fully qualified radio electrician, in the district. The .appeal was entered on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest.
Mr Edwin Edwards Chairman of 9 the Board, stated that the above was- one such case wliere up till the present, reservist had been in an essential position. Now, however men were wanted urgently to replace those overseas who were returning shortly. Decision was reserved it later being learnt that the. appeal was dismissed reservist not to be •? # . called before the end of April. In the appeal for reservist Scraggy who was classed Grade I, married with two children, it was stated that he was the only contracting electrician, in the district and that he attended to the work, of maintaining practically all the electrical equipment in. the Borough. Mr F. W. Lysaght, Borough Electrical Engineer, testified that Scragg attended to all the installation work necessary, there being no men capable of performing this task on the Borough staff. The appeal was adojurned sine die subject to reservist remaining in his present occupation. Paper Mills Cases Appeals were entered by the Whakatane Paper Mills, for seven employees six of whom are employed at the mill proper and the other at. Matahina. Mr Brown gave "evidence in all cases. Trevor Roy Cairns (married with two children Grade I) was described as an assistant-foreman in the packing and finishing department. His experience at the Work in Canada rendered him a man. impossible to replace in this country. Adjourned till the end of March for review. John Ditchfield } Grade I married with one. child, was filling the position of a maintenance electrician, a job which required his services seven days per week. Adjourned sine: die. In. the case of Stanley James Hohneck (Grade I single.) reservist was described as a bushman employed in one of the three gangs at Matahina. His direction would greatly reduce the output of the gang. Adjourned sine die. The appeal lodged for Irvine Keith McKenzie Milne was upheld by the Board. Milne was filling a position which, in English mills was known as that of a scheduling officer. He was one of the most skilled men employed. Adjourned sine die. The appeal lor Henry William Modgan classed as a lurnace bricklayer married with two children, Grade I, was dismissed. Allan Vivian McLean was spoken of as the only pake ha truck driver employed by the mill. He was a reliable'nlan and would be difficult to replace. Appeal dismissed. The appeal of R. J. L.
