TWENTY THOUSAND MAORIS
CENTRED on the. Whakatane town and district are no less than some 20,000 Maoris. This remarkable fact arises from a recent census of the Maori strength throughout the Matatua tribal lands, which regard Whakatane, the fabled landing place of their ancestors as their home centre. Twenty years ago this confederacy numbered less than twelve thousand, but today, embracing as it does the whole of the East Cape lands and backing up to Lake Waikaremoana, it has become known as the greatest Maori tribal group in the Dominion, and one which is likely to become a powerful force in the welding of Maori opinion in the future. Faced \*»ith this tremendous fact, what are we Pakehas doing about the training, settling and disciplining of this great body of potential citizens ?
