SHORTAGE OF MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS
ONE of the most interesting points of discussion at the last meeting of the Whakatane Hospital Board was the concern of members generally at the acute shortage of Medical Practitioners in this district and the seriousness of the problom in a district where the population, particularly the native, is growing rapidly from year to year. The discussion disclosed the fact that Board members were fully aware that many ailing people. were frequently compelled to wait all day and even till midnight before their turn arrived for advice, treatment or diagnosis. Such cases are rare but nevertheless occur, and it is a drastic position for any district to have to face up to. The Board was likewise unable to find a single applicant to its recent advertisement for a House Surgeon, a further indication of the acute state of affairs whi6h apparently exists throughout the Dominion. The acid test of the position as far as this district is concerned seems to be the fact that whereas twp medical men could apparently handle the needs of this dis trict, since the introduction of Social Security, three are not enough.
