FEED POSITION
MINISTER'S STATEMENT
Tlie urgent necessity for every pig farmer to be self-supporting in his own pig feed crops was emphasised recently by the Minister of Agriculture Hon. B. Roberts. The disastrous drought in Australia makes it imperative for New Zealand to be as self-supporting as possible, lie said. During the last nine months, 200,000 sacks of barley and barley meal have, been imported from Australia but no supplies will be available from there next year. The available, .supplies of New Zealand-grown barley and maize are. insufficient to meet the demands of poultry keepers who are dependant on these crops as well as 011 wheat, oats, pollard and bran. The. £5 per acre rubsidy which was announced some months ago is still open to pig farmers. Additional acreages of the following crops can still be sown this season—Carrots swedes chou moeliier and silver beet. Full details regarding the subsidy scheme are available from, and applications should be made through the District Pig Councils. The posit tlon is serious ami all pig producers should make, an effort to lie selfsupporting on their own farms concluded the Minister.
