ASSISTING RED CROSS
OPOURIAO RAISES £17
Thursday last was a reel letter clay at the Opouriao School when the. Junior Red Cross held a special stall and succeeded in raising the sum of £17 in a little under two hours. In spite of the unpleasant weather there was a good attendance of parents and friends and as the schooil j membership is only 17 (10 in the the result is most commendable and speaks -well for the co-operation of the parents sMrs N. J. Semmens, organiser for the Junior Red Cross in the Eastern made a short speech in open-< ing the stall. She thanked the president Mr L. Ruddick and the secre Mi as Valerie M'iddlemas j for the splendid work which had been, put into the effort. She also expressed tlie warmest appreciation, for the work of Miss Prideaux the school head mistress. The articles on display were mainly from the school handwork classes and Ave re. suitable for Christmas gifts. They included beautifully cohered coat worked guest towels, aprons and novelty calendars. fruit vegetables and seedlings also- were displayed f©r sale. The heavy rain unfortunatelyprecluded the possibility of holding the lawn competitions but one indoor contest was won by Miss Lois Prince. Afternoon, tea was dispensed by the girls. The money raised will be divided amongst four deserving causes: £7 to the Greek Children's Relief Fixnd f £3 to the Taneatua Red Cross Society £2 to the Christmas Gift Funds for children in the Wha!katane Hospital, and £5 retained for future dis-posal. The whole school Is to be warmly congratulated on; its splendid effort.
