FIRE BRIGADE BALL

ANNUAL FUNCTION HELD LARGE CROWD ATTENDS Feature of the Annual Fire Brigade Dance which was held on Friday evening in the Winter Show Buildings was the fact that unlike the previous one, held last year, the siren, remained silent the whole time j no chicken coop being permitted to burst into flames, and call the brigade away from the one night of pleasure they may call absolutely their own. With memories of previous balls run by the, Service, dancers came from far and near to take part in the fun, and certainly a lively evening resulted. Ihe hall and stage decorations were very appropriate, lor the occasion. Masses of greenery were twined round the pillars while the orchestra was placed in a setting of ferns and creeper. Along the front of the stage blue, green and yellow electric light bulbs formed the letters W.V.F.B. while several 'tools of trade' in the, form of a hydrant and lengths of hose were placed in the centre. With the. Premier Dance Band supplying the music and Messrs. Fred Skelton and Toy} Hurndell as M.C.s an enjoyable evening was asand the small amount of time which was allowed to lapse between dances kept the crowd on its toes. The floor was in perfect condition j for the large crowl which attended and* dancing was made the more pleasant by the entire absence of any dust whatsoever. Supper was of the usual high standard and was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd. A popular innovation after supper was the institution of a 'request dance' programme, in which the dancers wer e permitted to place their votes for any type of dance the3 r wished to be played, with the: M.C. In this, manner the crowd was assured of the dances it wanted. Winners of Novelty Dances were: Lucky Gay Gordons., Mrs Whittakcr and Ted Elvers; Novelty Valeta Miss Margaret Terry and Bill Rutherford. Proceedings were maintained till, well into Saturday and once again the Fire Brigade dance was votc*l by all, as being 'one of the best.'
