LEARN-TO ROW WEEK
NEW SEASON OPENING Rowers ex-rowers and intending rowers are eagerly awaiting the commencement of the new rowing season which opens on Sunday week. In preparation for this, a learn-to-row week was held last week ? but, as the result were somewhat disappointing, it has been extended to cover this week also. On Sunday 12th to mark the opening of the season, it lias, been decided to hold a number of events, more especially among the senior rowers. A trophy for the main one of these has been donated by Mr Havward and some very close finishes arc expected . At present on display in the Strand are five cups which may lie competed for during the season. The pick of these is the King Challenge Cup •which is. one of the most elaborate for any sport in the district. This was donated by the King Picture Company. Other attractive tro phies are the Cuek.sey Cup donated by Mr Tim Cueksey, late of the Commercial Hotel, and the Stuart Cup, donated by Mr W. A. R. Stua'rt. These should at least provide the necessary incentive to make the .sport one of. the most populat in the district.
So far, the response to the learn-to-row week has been mainly from boys of High School but it is hoped that lads a few years older will become interested as tlie season progresses.
A.T.C Headquarters A" decided improvement has been effected to the frontage of the local A.T.C. Headquarters with the removal of the weeds which formerly surrounded it. This part has been turfed and it is hoped will shortly be laid down in either gravel or pumice. Although performing a useful and necessary work, the headquarters have a central situation for such a type of building and therefore the surrounding area should rightly be kept neat and tidy, to conform with the uniformity of the town. Ratepayers Franchise "That a ratepayer franchise is the. only equitable one. in rural as residents, in the, county have lit* tie or no interest or concern in the local authority, and it cannot be claimed that they make, any direct or indirect contribution towards the funds of a local authority since no rent is. paid~ for the. house occupied by them on the farm, and the county councils consider that the man who finds the m'oncy i or his elected representative should say what should be done with it.'' Thus read one, motion presented to the conference of delegates of county councils, at Taurariga last week. This was moved by Mr C. W. Kennedy (Piako) and seconded by Mr D. G. McMillan (Hauraki Plains) and. carried unanimously.
