NEW COMBINATION
PROROPORO SCHOOL AND BOYS-
BAND
WELL SUPPORTED CONCERT
An exceedingly well supported concert was held in the Caledonian Hall on Thursday, October 26 when the Boys' Band combined with the Poroporo School gave a selection of items which proved to be very popular. Hakas and action songs by the Poroporo children intermingled with items by the Band went to make up a programme as interesting as it was which was made the more so as it was the. first time such a combination has been presented in Whakatane.
Among the Maori items, the singing of the Poroporo school choir, conducted by the headmaster } Mr A. 13. Goodwin unaccompanied, was perhaps the highlight of the first half while graceful poi dances > lively action songs and spirited liakas made the more realistic by the typical costumes worn found much favour with the audience. The native stick game was interesting and spectacular, while a touch of humour was added by a school play, depicting a small boy at the mixing up the broadcasts of a wrestling match and lectures on "Farming'' and "The Care of Babies." The band, under the baton of Mr W. Jarrett rendered its items in that clear and efficient manner for which it has become noted. It was perhaps heard at its best in the bracket .of hymns "New Rochdale" and "Deep Harmony." "A Night in Switzerland'' although good could have been heard to better advantage had the echoing cornet not been so close to the band. An instrumental quartet consisting of bandsmen L. Broadmore G. Skelton R. Ward and B. Skelton '» . ' gave an excellent rendering of Wagner, while accompanied by Mrs Ken Stewart Phil Moore and Brian Skel■9 ton pleased the audience with their respective trombone and euphonium sol,os. At the conclusion, Mr A. C. Sutherland, President of the Band congratulated the artists on their line effort and extended his thanks to the audience for the excellent support they had accorded the combination.
