LOSS OF RATES
STATE-OWNED HOUSES COUNCIL'S STRONG OBJECTION Formal notification to the Borough Council, to the effect that the New Zealand Railways had taken over a house! in Stewart Street for dtepartmental purposes and thait therefore rates would no longer be payable, brought the Mayor to his feet in strong protest at last Monday's meeting.
"This house is going to be used to accommodate an employee, who will be paying the Department rent like any other tenant " said Mr Barry. "T fail to see why as rent collectors they should be exempt from paying rates like anyone else."
In answer to a the Mayor said that it was constitutional that no rates were, payable on Government owned property, and although he did not think they would get far lie thought a strong protest should be entered, as the position was fast growing absurd.
The Council decided to write protesting vigorously against the rate which meant a growing burden on the other ratepayers of the town.
