FOUNDATION OF PROSPERITY
WHERE thirty thousands acres of low-lying rich pasture lands owe their basic productivity to the network of drains which criss-cross their green surface, it is only natural that the greatest emphasis should be placed on the unrestricted functioning of these water escapes. Thus Mr W. A. McCracken's suggestion at last week's meeting of farmers that Drainage Committees of ratepayers be set up, must be welcomed as a constructive and helpful suggestion to safeguard the future prosperity of the Rangitaiki. The position of the Plains, and the remarkable butterfat production which is now their annual contribution towards the Dominion output, makes it imperative that the utmost protection and care be exercised over their future; welfare. We can think of no better method by which this could be done, than by the mutual efforts, interest and advice of the settlers immediately concerned and the Department.
