MOTHERS OF GERMANY

IF we are not completely bereft of human sympathy we will spare a passing "thought for the long-suffering womenfolk of Nazi Germany. By destiny, fated to be born into a country which has been masculine-minded for centuries, their lot has been, as Hitler puts it, mainly to fulfil the 'privilege of producing sons for the Fatherland.' For them, in the face of the massacre which are now taking place in Poland, Russia, France and to a lesser extent in Italy, the ghastly picture is scarcely relieved by the destruction which rains from the skies, over their own quaking roofs or the prospect of the final overthrow and invasion of their country, which however misguided is their 'home.' Women of Germany; forced to sacrifice not merely their husbands, their sons, their brothers in the carnage of the guilty war of their leaders, but now that these have been either broken or gone, to conceal their broken hearts from their school-boy sons and their old men as these too, march to the shambles. How long can this strain of unutterable anguish be withstood by human flesh and blood? How long will the tears of Germany's womanhood have to flow 'ere they melt the cold militaristic heart which has cost the German nation so much.
