HISTORIC FAMILY FLAG

The Union Jack flown in celebration on Friday, August 25 }as\ from F. M. Abbott's premises has an in* teresting history.

It was the family flag of the lata J. G. Ranby formerly of the Christchurch City Guards and the "lato Mrs E. B. Ranby of Domain Road % Whakatane, who left New Zealind 3o years ago to reside in Canada. The flag was brought to C. Ranby, Edgecunibe, eldest son who joined up with the Canadian 156 th over-* seas force in 1914-18 and fought *n Passendale where he met the Anzacs on the Somme. This flag was flown many times on the prairies o* Alberta for victories wbn in the test war nearly 30 years ago.

Owned now by C. R. Ranby, of Whakatane, it is fitting to see the old flag flying once, again 'for vie* tories won in 1944 with especial thought for the following members of the Ranby family: Joe Ranby. Whakatane (Horne^Force); Bob Ranby, R.N.Z.A.F.. Canada; George Hollister, Whakatane,, Overseas (Islands).
