TIMBER FOR BRIDGE DECKING

COUNTY COUNCIL'S POSITION

In response to a recent letter to the Timber for bridge decking timbers in which the Council stand,in urgent need,, the Whakatane County Council has received the following reply:— "In regard to the last paragraph of the Council's letter of 11th August it is asked over what peried the. 10 000 feet of. bridge decking be'required. As the Council is aware, the present, critical position as regards the production of timber renders it necessary that a hand to mouth policy be adopted for vhich reason reserves cannot be built up, but if the Council will supply quantities and dates, steps will be taken to ensure a supply. Asked to give his opinion, the en-* gineer, Mr C. H. Brebner. said that the Council simply had to have, bridge or it could not carry on. The Council decided to renew the application, which if not granted,should be further submitted through the M.P. to the Government.
