MAIZE MARKETING

RATIONING PROPOSED

SHORTAGE OF STOCKS

Regulations for ensuring the orderly marketing of maize during the coming months arc to be Gazetted shortly according to information given to a meeting of Gisbornc maize growers by Mr R. G. C. Ffitcli, a representative of the, Internal Marketing Division. Mr Flitch explained that the purpose of the regulations was to ration supplies, which were expected to be short of the. demand during the next 12 months so that, there would be a fair and equitable distribution. Under the new 7 regulation, a committee of control would be appointed, comprising the director of the Internal Marketing Division, the Director-General of Agriculture, two members representing the maize growl's (one from Gisbornc and one from the Bay of Plenty) two members representing the merchants (one from a growing area and one from a consuming district), and one representing the NeF Zealand Poultry Board. This conittntfec wouki control the marketing of maize grown in the main growing areas of the Auckland Province and the northern Hawse's Bay district, and would re-< gulate the supplies of maize in order to ensure a fair and orderly distribution. The. maize would go through the ordinary channels, as at present, and growers were entitled to send their maize through an 3* merchant, as in the past, or i consign it direct to a consumer, al* though in the latter case, he must now secure a permit. The new regulations would not affect maize ready sold or delivered, but were to operate immediately. Growers' Representatives

It would be necessary, Mr Ffitch said, for the Gisborne growers to nominate three of their members, whose names would be submitted to the Minister of Marketing for the selection of one Gisborne district representative, on the maize rationing committee. The Bay of Plenty people would be asked to do the same.

While objecting to some of the provisions contained in the proposthe meeting, -which was presided over by Mr Iv. Cameron ; agreed to acccpt the regulations. One of the objections was that the growers were not permitted to directly select their representative on the committee and that the man finally selected from the three nominations would be on the committee only at the pleasure of the Minister, whereras the growers themselves would not Ijc able to change, their representative if he faile.d to give satisfaction to them. . { The meeting nominated Messrs,. C. S. McGuinncss and Iv. Cameron foi\ selection by the Minister while these thre,e were also authorised to represent the Gisborne growers at the hearing of the Price Tribunal of the*application lor a higher subsidy on the, maize marketed during the coming period.
