Residents will have noted with interest the mention in the latest cable news covering the activities of the celebrated N.Z. Night Fighter Squadron, the; name of Flying Officer A. L. Shaw who shot down two enemy aircraft over Normandy. Flying Officer Sliaw was a well known resident of the Whakatane district and was working for Mr Alec McLean before he joined up with fcho Air Force. He has been singularly fortunate 'in that whilst he was wireless operator on the U.S.S. Niagara for some time he left that «hip just before she was torpedoed. Flying Officer Shaw* will be remembered as an outstanding Rangilailu Rugby football representative.
