WHILE WE SLEEP
CARELESS PROPRIETORS
WHAT THE NIGHT WATCHMAN
FINDS
It would probably surprise the business community of Whakatane if a complete tally of the oversights discovered by the nightwatchman were published. In his periodic reports to the Retailers' Association the. nightwatchman lists regularly doors left open, keys left in locks, windows unlatched, and in less numerous cases, fires left unattended. From the secretary of the Association Ave learn that these oversights occur roughly at the rate of six or seven specific instances per week. A survey over the whole year would reveal an unbelievable state of affairs whereby important business premises had been .left unattended and open to any prowler who may be in the vicinity.
To- sum up it is obvious that the town is once more deeply indebted to the officer who patrols the streets when the rest of Wha'katane is in bed.
