ARBOUR DAY
BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY'S EFFORT
WORKING BEE ON SATURDAY
The attractions of Whakatane as a placc of residence for its citizens and as a resort for visitors should in. the near future be considerably enhanced by the activities of the local Beautifying Society in its efforts to improve the general appearance of the public reserves and streets in the town. The Government has invited the general public throughout the Dominion to observe Wednesday the 2nd of August as an occasion for Arbour Day. Accordingly the: local Society is arranging a programme of work i'or that day. Originally it had been intended to plant trees in Commerce Street leading into' the town but uncertainty as to whether the hillsides are privately owned has led to that project being deferred for the meantime. However a number of native trees will be planted along the foreshore to supplement the pohutukawas already growing there. A selection of trees and ornamental shrubs has been made by the committee for the, purpose: of planting same in the reserve; at the Heads and the playground in the town. A working bee will assemble at the playground on Saturday at 2p.m. to prepare the ground for tree planting. All who are in sympathy with the objects of tlie Society are cordially invited to attend and render assistance on that occasion.
