THE BOY'S BAND
BOROUGH COUNCILLOR'S PRAISE
example; of self-iielp
The warmest expressions of commendation were indulged in by Borough Councillors, when the annual application for a grant was under consideration from; the Whakatane Boys Band. The 1 balance sheet which was also forwarded for the Council's information showed a credit of £376, and! speakers declared that the performance of the junior band! was most praiseworthy, and 1 reflected an illustration on what can be done, when an organisation endeavours to help itself.
"The Boy's Band, is a distinct asset to the town," declared the Mayor, who; also expressed his congratulations to the bandmaster, Mr WJarrett.
"They have made a great, effort," said Cr Sullivan, who went on to say that at one time he had urged that the band should ta'ke some steps to help itself. He; was; very pleased to see the progress it had made and suggested that in making the usual grant, of £20, the council should also extend its congratulations to Mr Jarrett.
Cr Creeke added his congratulations saying that the band appeared to be a permanent asset.
Cr Canning returned thanks as vice-president of the band and mentioned that Cr Warren had been a tower of strength as secretary to the band, while without Mr Jarrett they could, not have achieved anything. The idea was to keep the band going in the town so that when the, boys came home they could at least have music to welcome them.
Cr Armstrong pointed out that though the band had a substantial credit, the time would come when they would have to find new instruments, and he knew that it was not unusual for a set to cost upwards of £1000. He hoped therefore that the same councillors who were praising the band up so much now would remember this point in the event of an application for a greater grant some time in the future.
The Council decided to grant the sum of £20.
