THEFT OF PETROL

YOUNG MAORI'S OFFENCE

STOLEN FROM EMPLOYER

Two charges of having stolen eight gallons of petrol from his employer a't Wainui over a long period were admitted l by a young Maori, Samuel Savage, in ihe Whakatane Court yesterday, before Messrs Brabant and 1 King, J.P's,

Sergeant' Farrell said that accused was a farm hand, and fiad on the occasions mentioned helped himself to the petrol, in order to enable himself and a companion to travel round the country in a small car. Unfortunately this type of offence was fairly prevalent in the district and was hard to detect. It was particularly hard on farmers who relied upon their small allowance to bring them to and from the town. He suggested a term of imprisonment, in order to serve as an example to others.

In sentencing accused to a month's gaol, the bench, observed that the case was a serious one in. that the rationing of petrol made every gallon of the greatest value. To have young fellows stealing it for amuesment purposes was a practice' which should be very firmly suppressed.
