CANDIDATES REMARKS POST-ELECTION SPEECHES "I must thank the electors for returning me unopposed," said His Worship the Mayor, laslt Saturday evening when addressing a small gathering at the Borough Council entrance, soon after the Town Clerk had announced the final figures. "Seeing that there has not been any mayoral election in Whakatane for the last twenty years, I am beginning to wonder if I am the only mug," he continued amidst laughter. Mr Barry thanked the electors also for putting into office the splendid team of workers which hadibeen announced and said that, he felt confident that they would face up to all the difficulties which now lay ahead of the Borough. He expressed regret at the non-election of one member, who had been a splendid worker and a 'valued councillor. "There arc enormous fields in this town for local activities apart f»om the Borough Council." said Mr W. Sullivan when addressing a few remarks to those candidates who had not been successful. There were dozens of avenues in which they could train for contesting the next election, and he. wished them all luck. Mr S. S. Shapley declared lfis policy would be as ever, based on commonxense, and added that the cltec- 1 tors would have to blame Hitler for some of the Council's shortcomings in the past. The successful candidates followed in expressing their thanks and appreciation. The unsuccessful nominees then spoke and received the warmest applause for their good sportsmanship and their p'romise to 'come again' on some other future occasion.
IN 7S-&E COUNTY THREE RIDING ELECTIONS NEW MEMBER FOR TARAWERA Of the eleven seats on the ' Whakatane County Council, three alone were contested! last Saturday. These were the Galatea, Matata and Tarawera riding's ai%3 the contests resulted in unseating only one of the four councillors concerned —Mr C* T. Smith, who has shared l the representation of the Tarawera ridfing- with Mr W. Hunter. In both other instances the sitting members were returned by substantial majorities. County Council—Rangitaiki Riding: xL. W. Luxton and xW. A. McCrac'ken; Omataroa Riding: xDC. Butler; Tancatua Riding: xH. C. McCready; Opouriao Riding: xA. F. McGougan; Nukuhou Riding: xJ. L. Burnett; Waimana Riding: xR. F. Wardlaw.

Smith 163 Harbour Board Result In the Harbour Board all the sitting members went back, there being no fresh nominees to warrant an election. The constitution of. the Board remains, as under:— Rangitaiki Ward: W. Hunter, C. T. Smith, G. Ticlcner; Taneatua Ward: R. Ruddick; Opouriao Ward: A. L. Richardson; Waimana Ward: J. A. Mitchell; Omataroa Ward: W. R. Boon; Whakatane Borough: G. R. Kent and G. A. Brabant.
