ELECTION RESULTS.
BOROUGH AND COUNTY CONTESTS HOSPITAL BOARD CHANGE-OVER NEW BOROUGH COUNCILLORS The tumult and the shouting in connection with the local body elections which this year reached' unusual proportions due to the recently enacted Polls Amendment Bill, has died down and! the results to hand all over the Dominion have created 1 widespreadl interest. In Whakatane ;the greatest local interest at-» iached to the Hospital l Boardi election., the outcome of which will undoubtedly mean an antagonistic attitude on the part of the new Board to the loan proposal which was authorised 1 little more than two weeks ago. The new Hospital Board comprises only three members who have hitherto espoused the extension proposals, while the % , Farmers' Union candidates have achieved 2 new members in the persons of Messrs J. A. Mitchell and J. P. Caulfieldi, giving a fight ing majority of five to three. The board's future deliberations will be watched, with Ithe greatest interest. On the Whakatane Borough Council, two new members, Messrs R. Morpeth and H. G>.\ Warren, polled extremely well securing fourth and seventh places respectively in voting preference. The only councillor to lose his seat was Mr C. Good who polled eleventh. We can only assume that the bulk of the electors of (the town do not appreciate the full weight of gratuitous work which Mr Good 1 lias carried over the years i'n the interests of the public the town's war effort. However Mr Good is a young man and will. ~we hope be again offering his services at future elections. The •six defeated candidates showed 1 their good' sense of sportsmanship by attending the Council Chambers when 'the results were posted and' congratulating the successful members. Several also expressed their intention of -standing again in the , It is somewhat unfortunate that radio and the call of the hearth has lessened public interest to the outcome of elee-> tions to a marked 1 degree, and . there were barely fifty persons assembled to hear the borough results and the speeches of the candidates. However the same true spirit of democracy prevailed and each speaker was warmly applauded. The only change-over in the - County elections was that pertaining to 'the Tarawera riding, - where Mr R. C. Leslie, defeated Mr C. T. Smith to the dtoal seat, whilch is shared by the other sitting councillor, Mr W. Hunter. In the other contested seats for Galatea and Matata, the sitting members, Messrs T. H. G. Gawfie and' F. J. Burt scored comparatively easy victories over their ■challengers Messrs F. H. Walsh. and l J. P. Caulfield. Voting on Saturday was fairly heayy i'ni the Borough due no doubt to the stimul'ous arising from the Amendment Bill controversy., and the fact that the local Labour Branch had cham*pioned two candidates, but in the Counrty_ the weather *no dioubt deterred many who would otherwise have made a point of voting,. It is considered however that taken by and large, the results are a fairly accurate conn sensus of public opinion, particularly with regard to the Hospital Lolan, which has been the subject of much jjitter controversy, and was also aggravated by 'the stand taken by the Farmrers' Union, in its attitude towards pledging candidates not .to levy Hospital rates in the event of being elected 1 . Such a requirement, is bound to have widespread results up and down the country, when the newly constituted bodies combine to their future policies.

On that occasion there was also a keen election and the number of votes cast tally fairly evenly with the latest election.
