WHAKATANE PROSECUTIONS

Prosecutions brought by the Transport Department against defaulting motorists occupied a considerable portion of the Whakatane Magistrate's Court sitting last Tuesday. Failure to possess a driver's license cost Richard C. Wardlaw 5s fine and costs 12s. Bertie Wm. Hughes for driving a lorry Avithout the requisite number plates was fined 20s and costs 12s. For having no warrant of fitness for his car Adam Te Whe.tu was fined 10s and costs 17;s. Operating a tra'ilor without a W.O.F. cost E. A. Haultain 10s and costs 12s. Of Joe Nu-ku, the inspector saicl that defendant was driving up Hillcrest when the. door flew off and fell on the road. The car was in a frightful state of disrepair. For having no warrant of fitness he was fined 10;s and costs 17s. For having no rear reflectors on their bicycles Clement T. Walker and James V. Kenworthy were each fined 5s and costs 12s. Joseph Skelton for having insufficient lights on his machine was similarly penalised. Richard H. Yeoman who rode a motor cycle without requisite lights was fined 20s and costs 10s. Charles Henry E. Swann who operated a vehicle with defective lights (no taM light) was fined 20s and costs 12s. Excessive speed on February 19 cost Keith Lindsay Jerikins £3 and costs 345. The inspector istated that he clocked his car at 40 m.p.h. in the Borough and 50 m.p.h. on the Paroa straight. Defendant said he was not aware of the restrictions. A story of two lorries travelling on the Taneatua highway at 40 m.p.h. was told by the inspector when John A. Stewart and Ronald A. Harris were prosecuted for exceeding 25 m.p.h. laid down, by the law. Mr Otley defended and stated that neither driver appreciated the pace at which they were, travelling. Fined 40is and costs 12s. The County Traffic Inspector proceeded against Percy W. McGulloch for excessive speed at Awakeri. Evidence showed his speed to have been 55 m.p.h. A second charge of having no warrant of fitness was also preferred. Fined £3 and. 32s costs, and lGs and 20s 6d costs.
