BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY
BOROUGH GRANT SOUGHT
DETAILED PROGRAMME
WANTED
A letter from the recently re-con-stituted Whakatane Beautifying Society seeking a grant from the Borough Council brought a formal request from that body asking for details of whatever beautifying or tree planting programme the Society had in mind. Cr Creeke in urging that the request should be given sympathetic consideration moved that the. sum of five guineas be granted. The Mayor thought the council should be furnished with more details before making any grant. "There is plenty of. scope in the Borough for this Society," declared Cr Armstrong, "we are very devoid of that sort of thing." Crs Shapley and Sullivan both declared that the Society should be encouraged, but considered it only right that the council should be furnished with more information upon •which to base the extent of its vote. It was therefore agreed to request further details from the Society.
