MATATA'S GYMKHANA
LARGE CROWD ATTENDS
SPECTACULAR FINISHES
HEAVY RAIiN INTERVENES Despite the heavy shower which broke over the sports area at 3 p.m. last Saturday the Matata Sports and' Gymkhana amply fulfilled its purpose by not merely realising the financial objective aimed at, but also by furnishing the district once again with a first class sports and social event. The committee responsible had tl whole, programme well in hand an carried out every department in thoroughly capable and satisfactor manner. Once again, Mr Fred Bui as announcer held the interest of tli crowd throughout by his timely con mentaries and happy observations The ladies responsible for runnin the refreshments are also to be warn ly congratulated on their work, r are also the Maori workers w r ho cor trolled and served the hungry dinei from the 'hangi' conducted at tli rear of the grounds. The horse events attracted man of the popular competitors of pre vious gymkhanas, and some excil ing finishes were witnessed. In th athletic section there were also se\ eral well-run races, but the heav rain intervening made it impossibl to complete the novelty events, an also dispersed the major portion o the crowd. The Highland Section, sponsore largely by the Tauranga Pipe Banc under Pipe Major Laurie Johnsto: was probably the best of its kirn seen in the. Eastern Bay. When th rain intervened, a general adjourn ment to the nearby Maori meeting house took place and there amids scenes of the greatest excitemen and highest spirits on the part o the spectators the dancing was com pleted in the happiest of atmos pheres. The Maoris were most lib eral in their applause, and showei the greatest possible interest. Whei a special interlude for the benefi of the onlookers was announced tin floor was simply packed with dusk;; performers who gave, their own in terpretations to the lively measure: of the bagpipes.
