DROWNING FEARED
YOUNG BOY MISSING
IXCmENT ON HAFT
What is feared, will be a further drowning fatality on the Whakatane River, occurred' yesterday afternoon when a ten-year-old school boy, Charles Al■ler?, son of Mr and Mrs Vic Al-i len, of Victoria Avenue, drifted out to mid stream on a homemadfe raft and was not seen again. The lad was playing on the water's edge with two other boys: of his own age. They hud iloated the raft and were endeavouring to pole, it a'long. The raft commenced to drift with the current and Charlie Allen in an effort to save it remained aboard. When he was last seen he was about mid-stream and tlie. boys ran for help. On their return lie was not on the raft and it is assumed that he endeavoured to reach the shore.
Intensive searching has been taking place since hut without success. The. police, with the aid of .searchlights have instituted an all night vigil on the lower harbour but no-> thing has yet been reported.
