WHAKATANE SCOTS

CALEDONIAN INGLESIDE

ST. ANDREWS NIGHI" OBSERVED

The Caledonian Hall was' well packed! last Friday evening the occasion being the local Society's observation of St. Andrew's night and also the final Ingleside for the present year.

Chief Symons was piped into the. hall by Hand Cpl Howat with due ceremony after which the; pipers played the music for the grand march which Avas well carried out under the watchful eye of the chief Avho Avas also M.C.

The music for the long programme of old-time dances was supplied by Mrs King's Orchestra, and the in-, sistcnt demands for encore numbers bore, out their great popularity with the crowd. Such dances as the 'Lancers,' 'Hesitation Waltz,' 'Barn Dance' found ready exponents and led to the general belief that the old timers had, genuinely come, to -stay.

Exhibition dancing by the Society's lassies Misses Phyllis RiA'ett, Pat Ferguson, Lennie Butler and Betty Fhrvell, Avas also a feature of the programme and the Fling and Hornpipe and Jig drew ready applause.

Much appreciated solos wcrs supplied by Mrs Burke (Waimarui) and Miss, Marion Raymond (Poroporo).

Prior to a dainty supper the haggis ceremonial drew considerable enthusiasm and the large platter bearing Scotland's national fare was piped once round the room to the. tune of the 'Road to the Isles' before being laid in front of th?. chief. The well known 'Burns address to the haggis' was then delivered aftci which it was distributed by the bandsmen to all in the hall.

Once again the ladies were re-t sponsible for the supper arrangements and we have notli'ing but praise for the able manner in which they were carried out.

Before the last dance Chief Symons tliankecl all present for their patronage, and also for their splendid support during the year.
