VISIT OF COMMISSIONERS

BUSINESSMEN ADDRESSED

Though their time was somewhat limited, three of the most prominent men in the scouting movement in the Dominion,, Mr Ilector Christie (Dominion Commissioner), Sir James Grose (Chairman of Dominion Council), and Sir Joseph Smith (Commissioner of the Auckland Metropolitan Area) were able to meet and to chat informally with a group of some twenty local businessmen, last Saturday morning. The meeting took place in the upstairs lounge of the. VVhakatane Hotel where the 'Scouters,' were met by His Worship the Mayor (Mr B. S. Barry) and the local Connnis. sioner. Brief addresses were given on the value of the movement as an offset to the growing problem of child delinquency and also as a basis lor building strong, tolerant and clean minded citizens, of the future. "Youth to-day was being tested as it had never been tested before and it was the duty of parents and adults generally to see. that it were given every opportunity of contacting j broader and sounder educational influences such as the scouting movement offered. The visitors were accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation and left later lor Opotiki en route for Gisborne. Meeting at Taurangu On Friday evening a special public meeting convened by the local Scout Committee was addressed by the group from the Dominion executive. From Whakatane were D.S.M,. S. F. Miller and, S.M. C. F. Thomas, together with Patrol Leader Malcolm Law of the Whakatane Scottish Troop. The speeches were an inspiration and drew the warmest, apuplause. Mr B. C. Robbins M.L.C. who presided added his contribution in a splendid address and the gathering was also greatly moved by the first hand testimony of the Rev. Gribble of Wailii who spoke on the practical value of Scouting as he knew it.
