LACK OF QUORUM
ANNUAL MEETING LAPSES
WHAK ATAXIC CHAAIBEU OF COMMERCE
In 1940 when tlie Whakatane Chamber of Commerce became revitalised after some years of hibernation, prospects were bright, and the attendance of 39 local businessmen augured well for the resuscitated body. Last evening however after three years of useful operation, and in anfewcr to no less than 102 cir-i cular and two successive advertisements in the Beacon, it was found impossible to muster the requisite quorum of ten. As a result the annual meeting lapsed and has been adjourned till Wednesday next, November 24th. The complacency of the businessmen of Whakatane would be hard to equal anywhere and their action last evening in respect of the very organisation which they have set up to boost their own interests and to further those of the town defies comprehension. It has» been said that the perpetual good' trading enjoyed by the average shopholder has led ! to a selfish attitude which gives nothing in return for the good living and substantial returns which have been reaped over a long period of years. This of course is open to question but a few more instances of last evening's category would seem to bear this' out. Whakatane businessmen can give this assertion the lie direct by attending in force the adjourned meeting on the 24th.
