FALSE FIRE ALARM TWO YOUTHS COXVI.CTEI) At the Opotiki Magistrate's Court bo lore. Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., Tu Delamcre. aged IS. years, was charged Avith wilfully giving to the Opotiki Fire Brigade a false alarm of tire ami also with committing mischief by wilfully iSreaking a Jirebox glass, valued at Is. Defendant ijleadcd. not guilty. Sergeant J. iTsbister said thai defendant. was in company wifli another boy who had. just appeared before the Children's Court oil the same charges. Constable G. MeCurracli read a statement taken l'rom accused in which he adflritted that, he was near the Drill Hall with the other boy wlio said that he Avas going to let the alarm off. Defendant said, "Yes, you can let it 5J0." Defendant, then entered the witness box and said that he. did not do anything at all. Questioned by Sergeant Jsbisten, defendant said that he and the other boy were the only two there at the time. The other boy said he. was going to let the alarm oil' and defendant was 10 yards away from the box. When the larm went he: galloped away 011 his horse. The Magistrate said that defendant was just over the. age for the Children's Court, and he considered him one of the youths of this town v.ho needed supervision. Defendant would be admitted to probation for 12 months, and is not to be in the town at night without the consent of the police. The youth who appeared before the Children's Court admitted the offences. Sergeant Lsbister said that during July and August there was an unusual number of alarms usually about midnight and after. On the night, of sth September a fal,se alarm Avas given... and ast he result of enquiries they interviewed defendant who admitted px*essing the button on the corner of St. John and Ford Streets, but not on any other occasion. The Magistrate said that defendant would only get into mischief at home.
