MAORI LIVING CONDITIONS ECHO OF RECENT CASE Ira connection with, the report of the court proceedings which involved the death of a Maori infant, and which appeared in our issue of Tuesday, October 26th, we have since learnt that the dwelling in which the injuries were sustained l by the child was a well builit farmcottage owned and on the property of Mr J. H. Foster of Pekatahi. The building is a fourroomed one equipped with bathroom,, electricity and hot water serA'ice. Built for a farm worker and his wife there was no reason for the over-crowding which took place on the occasion when as the evidence stated', four adult Maoris occupied a double bed the result of which it Avas maintained, led to the fatal injuries sustained by the child* We hasten to correct any impression that Ave intended any stigma to be throAvn' on Mr Foster as OAvner of the cottage, and regret any such impression which may have been conveyed. We have satisfied ourselves by enquiry that asi above mentioned the employer in this instance provided an up-to-date cottage with all usual conveniences. Our intention was solely to convey the shocking circumstances Avhich in this case arose out of sheer abuse of the good conditions provided and Avhich ultimately led to the death of a helpless infant.
