OPOURIAO SCHOOL
THE ORIGINAL PUPILS OPENED 4(5 YEARS AGO Last week in the Beacon we. published a list of original settlers in the Opouriao Valley. It may interest readers to know that the Opouriao School Avas opened on May 10, 1597. The following is a list of pupils enrolled on that day: Sydney Martyn Semmcns, Arthur Bernard Semmcns, Daisy May Scrrimens, Mabel Rust, Lena Rust, Alice Rust, Elizabeth Marian Ernest,, Susanna Winifred Ernest, David Ernest, Isabella May Peebles, Janet Ellen Thorn, Herbert Lionel Thorn, John Henry Thorn, Dorothy Wilson, Olive Wilson,, Raymond Wilson. Later in the same month were added the names of William Garlick, Joseph Addison, Edward Addison, John Addison, Kate Lottie Se.ccombc, Thomas Thorne Seccombe, Ruby Smith, Francis Flowenlay, Xessie Flowerday, Henry Ernest. Louise Smith, Marion Smith. At that time the school was called Opouriao South, to avoid confusion with Opouriao North School, now Tancatua.
