BOROUGH WATER SUPPLY
UNSATISFACTORY STATE OF PLANT
ENGINEER'S IIKPOUT
In his report to the Whakatane Borough Council at its meeting lasf week, the Borough Engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, stated with reference Lo the water works plant: Consider-
able trouble has been experienced with the. two pumps during the last few days. This has. been caused by the very long period, that the water has" been discoloured. No. 1 pump has been pulled down for inspection
and considerable wear lias taken place over the last six months. New gland brasses and a new set of thrust plates have been litted. No. 2 pump has also been dismantled and a complete. overhaul and the replacement of all liners and wearing rings etc. is found to be necessary. This work is quite a big job and owing to A. ami G. Price being so full handed with war work and the fact that the condition of No. 1 pump is not too good I propose to lit new gland brasses only and attempt, to continue. to keep this pump in scdvice until the new unit can be put. into use. I would like to suggest to the Council that some definite policy
regarding future extension's and alterations be decided upon at an early date so that consideration may be given to the possible replacement of No. 1 pump in the very near future or that any alternative schemes may be decided upon.
