WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WHAKATANE

The October meeting of the AVhakalane Women's Institute was held on Tuesday last, the occasion being the Institute birthday. A very large attendance resulted, seating accommodation being taxed to its utmost. The large number of visitors was most gratifying. Mrs Iv. Stewart presided. Upon completion of the business a ''general knowledge, test" was made. A novelty event was the "mad hatters parade." This drew a good number of entries., and, caused much mirth, the "trimmings" of the hats ranging from dish mops, carrots and other vegetables to a black cat removed from its customary mantleshelf. Some of the hats, though erratic in composition, proved nevertheless very pretty and becoming to their wearers,. Mrs Stewart, who wore a large "nest" of hen eggs, was the winner. A large stall in the centre of the room upon which were placed the flowers for competition, drew much favourable comment. The winners of the competitions were as follows: Bowl for effect, Mrs Fennel I 1 and 2. Vase for effect, Airs Whitfc 1; Mrs Crozier 12. Shoulder spray, Mrs Crozier 1; Mi\s 2. A play was enacted during the afternoon the players handling theii' parts most capably. The name of the play was "Can the Leopard?" The cast included Airs Suteliffe as Georgina. Airs Print, Airs Flip, the cook. Airs Crozier, Charlotte, Mrs DarviW. Joan, Airs King, Eva and Airs Murphy, Eva. On display were articles of handiwork completed by the variousclasses and many really clever and beautiful exhibits were noticed. — i'cltcx bags, gloves, pewter work, felt flowers, breadcrumb posies, and papier mache. dolls heads.

A bountiful afternoon tea Avas served and the meeting closed Avith the National Anthem.
