A FISH STORY

PORPOISES PROVE HANDY

The advent of a school of porpoises completely changed the luck of a fishing party at Whale Island' recently. Because of rough seas the party was unable to fish on the exposed grounds and was trying its luck, with only moderate success, by the rocks at the entrance to McEwan's Bay. The school of porpoises which were first sighted to seaward, worked round, the entrance of the bay and came some distance towards the launch before veering off and making seawards again. I'- is possible that, they drove iish in before them, because bites came thick and fast for a few minutes and instead of an occasional rock cod. several big schnapper, gurnet, a barracouta and one 201b liapuka were hauled into the boat. h\ quick time. As one of the party pointed out the incident opened up fascinating possibilities since in Japan trained cormorants —shags to you—are used lor fishing, so that it should not be impossible for some one to try his hand as a trainer of porpoises, using them to muster and drive schools of lish as dogs do sheep.
