PARTY STRENGTHS DETERMINED
THE final election results as far as the Dominion is concerned have now been decided and according to Dominion returning officer the military votes still to come should not reverse any of the positions now advertised. In view of this it is fairly safe now to say that party strengths will be Labour 45, National 34 and Independent 1. Of the most closely contested seats, Labour has withstood, on present figures, strong National bids for Eden, Oamaru, Raglan, Otaki, Wairarapa and Motueka, but has lost New Plymouth and Waitemata. In Eden, the sitting Labour member, Mr W. T. Anderton, has a majority of 10 over Lieutenant-Col-onel W. H. Fortune (National), who was leading by 12 on the official civilian counts plus the preliminary service figures.
