THE LEECHES AND THE PARASITES
A FORCEFUL remark made by the only lady member of the Whakatane Hospital Board yesterday will be warmly endorsed by our readers. The discussion dealing with the mis-spent proceeds of Social Security money by many Maoris in this district was under discussion and the point ma,de by the speaker mentioned was to the effect that unfortunately there existed in the Pakeha community certain leeches and parasites who encouraged the Maori in such habits. For the honest outspoken truth we find this statement hard to beat and we warmly congratulate the member on her fearlessness and perception. When we can root out some of the underground Pakeha evils which have contributed so consistently and shamelessly towards the worst of the Maoris faults, we will have gone a long way towards raising our own native race to a point of independence and responsibility.
