The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Tuesdays and Fridays. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1943 RISING GALE OF DEFEAT
TURKEY has been watching events and during the past week has affirmed the close character of her alliance with Britain. Thus do straws in neutral winds betray the rising gale of defeat that seems fated presently to sweep over the Axis dictatorships. The sands have almost run out for the enemy in Italy, and his chances of being able to evacuate a substantial part of his forces do not look good. The Allied air ascendancy seems now to be complete, and it is certain that the plight of the Luftwaffe everywhere is much more serious than had been supposed. The fall of Rome will probably write finis to the war so far as Italy is concerned. The Badoglio regime is doing its best to hold the country together, but as the shackles of dictatorship fall away the popular demand for peace is becoming more and more insistent and it seems unlikely that the Government will be able to hold out against it much longer. It is anybody's guess what will happen after that. Mighty blows are pending, and the enemy, becoming weaker every day, will be in dire straits before winter adds to the hopelessness of his situation.
