WORK FOR SCHOOL-BOYS
VACATIONAL EMPLOYMENT
PLANS FOR A.MAS HOLIDAYS
During last Xmas school holidays, a large number of the older boys accepted temporary employment on farms,, about 50 of them were placed in the Rotorua and Bay districts and it is anticipated double the number will lie required this year. Although man}" of the boys, were unaccustomed to farming life, they quickly adapted themselves to the new environments and their assistance was Avelcomc, especially with so many odd harvesting jobs that they can very usefully fulfil. The Primary Production Council in conjunction with the National Service Department are again planning to introduce, the scheme. At present a eanva.s is being made around the schools' for boy volunteers and. at a later date, notice will be given Avhen applications will be accepted from farmers for their assistance. Last year many late requests AA r ere received and extreme difficulty was experienced in supplying the boys: in some cases they had to be brought from as far as Wellington, incurring needless travelling expenses. When notice, is given, prompt attention Avill be necessary to secure, a boy, as the closing date Avill be firmly adhered to. This service, in addition to the territorial mobile camps that arc to be established for harvesters should be a material help 'in overcoming seasonal shortage of labour. It is to be hoped the farming community will show no laxity in anticipating their requirements, so that the organising of the schemes will Avork to the best advantage.
