FURLOUGH MEN

SIR APIRANA NGATA'S ATTITUDE

Sir Apirana Ngata expressed the attitude of the Maori people, in regard to the members of the Maori Battalion on furlough from the M'iddle East when speaking at the Victoria Cross hui on Wednesday. He said that, the decision to stay or return should not be left to the men. They should be made to sta}-. (applause). The rotten thing about it 'was that if. the men made their own decision to stay they would feel their position keenly when -they saw others go. "We have plenty of men to take their places. We have plenty for reinforcements until the end of next year," he added. Sir Apirana said his remarks applied to all men on furlough except those regarded by the army as key personnel.
