His owner, Mr Symcs of Christ-church, has definitely ■'.•decided to retire the Illumination gilding at the end of the present season, so his last appearance in public over the obstacles may be at Trentham next month. NEWS OF THE CHAMPION Kindergarten, New Zealand's recognised champion race horse of the past thtfee seasons may again be in the limelight. News, is to hand that he is executing steady work on the Gisborne tracks; that he has been entered for the Melbourne Cup to be run in November, t and that arrangements are already being made for his transport to Australia. A victory in the Melbourne Cup would indeed be the culminating point in the turf career of a thoroughbred performer of very great merit. AN ACQUISITION The well known cross-country rider of Canterbury, R. Beale, has signified his intention to return to the saddle. At'present he is schooling the steeplechaser, Valantua, at Riccarton and will ride this horse in the Wellington Steeplechase and Grand National. He will be an acquisition to the. ranks of horsemen over the big jumps.
