GATHER
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Wet and broken weather failed to deter the Wliakatane Bowling- Club members from attending their annual meeting and smoke concert held in the Caledonian Hall last Saturday evening. Some lorty members were present and tlie evening was favoured with that general atmosphere of good i'el-. lowsliip which marks the bowling fraternity the world over. Before commencing routine the president, Mr W. S. Henderson, asked all to stand in silence to Jlie memory of Messrs J. Boon, A. Chambers and J. Healcy who during the year had joined the great, majority. After reading his annual report, Mr Henderson refered to the remarkable number of new players who had played prominent bowls during the jiast season. The balance, sheet which showed a credit balance of £58 was submitted, by the treasurer, Mr Charlie I 3 earson. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet Mr C. Loane congratulated the president and his committee, of the splendid manner in which they had conducted the club's activities. He thought that the Draw Committee' might have had more experienced players in its personnel but apart from that the year had been most successful. Mr W. Howat added his congratulations maintaining that he had had more enjoyment out of last season than any other lie could remember. Treasurer: Mr C. Pearson. Green Superintendent: Mr A. C. King. Committee: Messrs A. C. King, J. Francis, A. Burgess, L. Bennett, ACarling. Handicapper and Sole Selector: MiStan MeLeod. Hon Auditor: li. H. G. Warren. Coach: Mr C. Loane. ! Delegates to Bowling Centre: Messrs Littlejohn, S. McKenzie and S. MeLeod.
THE SMOKO' A VARIED PROGRAMME As in the past the Smoke Concert which 10l lowed the annual meeting included some, favoured guests who possibly are expected to become potential members of the club or at least ambassadors in its interests. In any case last Saturday evening's gathering was. unanimously voted, the best of its kind in the club's history which is saying a lot. As usual the most prominent feature of the repast Ave re the 'suckin £ P'»-s' AAhich Stan McLeod seems now to have accepted as an honor* ary responsibility eA r er since they were first voted A.l. at an earlier historical occasion.
The talent, at the 'smoko' Avas also another favourable feature and the long toast list. Avas satisfactorily punctuated by splendid items by such Ave 11 known artists as Tony Smith (representing the Te Teko bowlers), Aubrey O'Rourke (No. 5 Infantry H.G.) and. E. Bridgeman.Following the presentation of trophies Avon during the season by the president, the toasts of the evening Avere honoured as under: "The Loyal Toast, Mr Les Littlejolm: "Men in the. Armed Forces" Mr B. S. Barry and Capt. H. Brabant; "Kindred. Sports" Mr J. Creeke and Mr Les Luxton "The Ladies" Mr A. Burgess and Mr S. McLeod; "Th« Visitors" Mr J. Alexander and Mr T. Gee. Mir R. F. Smith once again gave his happy dissertation entitled "Sidelights on Bowls" Avhieh Avas dedicated to the playing members of the past years and Avhieh introduced. most of the prominent grcens*men. Items givon during the eAening were, provided by Messrs Ken Jarrett (cornet solo), Tony Smith (monologues), A. O'Rourke (solos), A. Carling (monologues) and J. Bridgeman (instrumental item).
