COLLECTION IN WHAKATANE
PAPER FROM BUSINESS AREA
On Saturday next the Wliakatane Waste Paper Committee will stage a further collection throughout the business section. Once again businestsmen are asked 1 to co-operate by having their paper in readiness for the collectors who will be calling during the morning. METAL, PAPER, RUBBER lX)MINION CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT
In his address to the recent Provincial Council J"or the Reclamation of Waste, the Chairman. Mr J. W. Collins, referred to what had been accompli shed in the past year. He. said:— And what, you may ask, lias been accomplished? Concentration has been given to the planned collection ol' non-ferrous metals, cast iron, paper, rubber, collapsible, tubes, electric lamp globes, throughout tlieDo'minion, and local drives have been made for bottles, tins and sacks. Some 230 tons of brass, copper, lead, aluminium and tubes were collected as a result of the first appeals; hundreds: of tons of cast iron; 17,750 tons of waste paper; 2200 tons of rubber (still proceedings); 41 tons of cleaning rags; and several hundreds of thousands, of used lamp globes. At this time we are malting special efforts to increase) the tonnage of Avaste paper and rubber —the two. New Zealand Paper Mills require 11,000 tons during the. current year—Gooo tons for Wliakatane and 5000 for Mataura. We also want to secure; in total 8000 to 10,000 tons of rubber waste and therefore appeal for your whole-hearted co-operation.
