TOWN DEVELOPEMENT

HARBOUR BOARD'S PLAN

XE\V POST OFHCI-; SITE

The AVhakatane Harbour Board has at the instigation of the Borough Council taken steps to amend the boundaries in its town development plan, of. the proposed new Post OlTiee site. At its last meeting, a copy of the amended plan was tabled from Messrs Harrison and Grierson. The .secretary, Mr C. G,, Lucas, reported that Mr Barry had, been approached in his official capacity as- Mayor of AVhakatane, and had stated that the Borough Council would agree to the proposed alteration, the same being as recently outlined, to the Borough Committee at the Harbour Board meeting, it being understood that all costs including the necessarj- alteration to the road formation, would be. undertaken at the board's expense. The board then decided that amended Post Office .site plan be submitted to the Post and Telegraph Department l'or approval. Strand Extension Roadi

Regarding the move to Jink the Strand extension to the inter-sec-tion of King Street and Domain Road, Air C. A. Suckling advised that in J937 all steps required by law lor the taking of lands lor a road had been complied Avitli up to and including the point of hearing objections under .sections 22 and 23 oi' The Public Works xYct 1928 and a resolution .by the board passed on 3/9/37 to the effect that notwithstanding the objections it was expedient that the Avork should proceed. The next step was tlte laying before the Governor General of a memorial under paragraph G of Section 23, with a view to his issuing the Proclamation. The Act does not specify any time within which, this shall be done, and it is advised that it may well be done now. In view of the lapse of nearly six years it is conceivable that the Minister might require some new notice to the objectors before lie issues the Proclamation.

The board, decided to depute the chairman and secretary confer with owners of areas which ay ill be severed as the result of the board's Strand extension road proposals and which areas, will not have access to a legal road either directly or through owners' adjoining lands — that committee endeavour to purchase such severed lands at the per acre rate, which will apply to the lands required for road.
