PETITION TO COUNCIL

URGED TO PURCHASE

The Whakatane County Couiu-il at its meeting last week received a petition signed by W. J. Murray and 49 others praying the council to purehosc on behalf of the Otakiri settlers the. hall owned at present by Mr Beattie, and to form a special rating area to repay the capital cost of the purchase. Mr 11. Leslie, secretary of the Otakiri Settlers Hall Committee, also wrote requesting on behalf of the committee that in the event of tlyj County Council establishing a special hall rating'area at Otakiri and purchasing the hall on behalf of the Otakiri ratepayers. £330 be made available, viz. £130 for tlxe purchase of the hall, and. £10(1 to cover expenses in connection Avith purchase of hall and to cover the cost of materials required to put the. hall in reasonably good order. The County Clerk reported that under Section 122 of. The Counties' Act 1920 and Section 2of T' le ' Counties' Amendment Act 1929, the council could on a majority ratepayers' i petition by special order, make, and levy an annually recurring separate rate not to cxceed Avith the general rate, a maximum of 3d in the pound on the capital of the rateable property in proposed area. Such rate income would be applied in reduction of any adA'anee made for the purpose of purchasing the Otakiri Public Hall and renoAating such. The rateable capital Aalue of the proposed area Avas approximately £197,H01, and the rateable unimproAX'd A'uluc Avas approximately £77<>71, and a rate on the unimproved rateable value would produce £101 16s. 3d approximately. The council decided to set up a committee comprising Riding Councillors and. County Clerk to confer Avith. the Otakiri Hall Committee and if the proposed district is adjusted satisfactorily, petition be drawn and, handed to the Hon. Secretary, Otakiri Settlers' Hall" Committee for signature.
