KAWHIA FARMER RUNNER-UP
CUP GOES TO ROTOKTJA DISTRICT A King Country Maori, Mr'Wharc Moke, of Kawhia, has been awarded second place in the competition among Maori farmers for the Ahiiwlienua trophy, a silver cup donated in 193'5 by Viscount Bledisloe to commemorate his visit to lands in the course of development by Maori settlers under various Native Land Settlement schemes. it will be recalled that Mr Tommy Anderson, of Te Kuiti, won this coveted trophy last year. The winner this year was Mr Tilieina Kingi, of Rotorua. The judge, Mr K. 31. Montgomery, Fields Instructor, Te Kuiti, comaientcd, on the fine effort of the "winner,. who had undoubtedly reaped the. benelit of previous attempts in the competition. The effort of Mr Whare Moke was also highly commended, especially when taking into consideration the conditions prevailing a few years ago. The type of pasture now established, where previously heavy manuka grew, showed Avhat could be accomplished when attention was given to good soil husbandry.
He was Lo be commended on the excellent woolshed with attached lean-to implement .shed lie had built, and also on the manner iui which he had utilised, the materials at hand. The herd and the calves showed the result of herd testing and the careful selection of bulls.
